What makes a good time to go
Tips such as 'Wednesday is always empty' sound neat, but nobody can promise a quiet day at the Louvre. Crowds shift with the season, the weather, closures and what else is on in Paris. Build your visit on things that are fixed instead: which days the museum is open, how late it stays open, whether a reservation is required and how much time you have.
Three facts matter most. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. It stays open until 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday, with some rooms closed in the evening. And a time slot is recommended, because it gives you a fixed arrival time. This guide is independent, so check the museum's own notice for your date.

What each time slot offers
Based on the opening rules, not on crowd forecasts.
| Time | What you get | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Opening at 9 a.m. | The full day ahead and time for more than one wing | On Wednesday and Friday, level 2 opens only at 10:30 a.m. |
| Afternoon, 6 p.m. days | A later start without losing the whole day | Last entry at 5 p.m.; rooms begin to empty at 5:30 p.m. |
| Wednesday or Friday evening | Open until 9 p.m., last entry at 8 p.m. | Some level 2 painting rooms are closed in the evening |
| First Friday evening | Free entry after 6 p.m., except in July and August | You still need a ticket from the museum's own shop |
| Tuesday | – | The museum is closed |
If you come with a plan for one work, go there first and see the rest afterward. The opening hours page has the full table, and the ticket page explains slots and the reservation rule that applies from October 17 to November 1, 2026.
Louvre tours and tickets for your date
Guided tours and entry tickets with a time slot from independent providers, with live prices and availability.
Queues are three different things
People say 'the queue' and mean different steps. Keep them apart when you plan.
The security check
Everyone passes it, with or without a reservation. Bags over 55 × 35 × 20 cm are not allowed.
The entrance
Lines at the pyramid are separated by reservation and entitlement status. The pass provider warns that without a reserved slot, entry can take very long or fail.
The crowd at one work
The Mona Lisa hangs in the Salle des États, room 711, with Veronese's Wedding Feast at Cana opposite. How long you wait there varies and cannot be predicted.

How long to spend at the Louvre
There is no required minimum and no official average.
The museum itself gives two durations. Its masterpieces trail is set at 90 minutes, and its introduction tour lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Both describe a product, not the time an average visitor spends. Use them as a measure of scale, and add time for security, the cloakroom and walking between wings.
About 90 minutes
One wing and a few works. Pick from the 15 highlights and stay in one area.
A half day
Two wings, with a break. The reception hall under the pyramid connects Denon, Sully and Richelieu.
A late night
On Wednesday or Friday you can start in the afternoon and stay until closing. Mind the last entry at 8 p.m.
Because every exit is final, take your break inside. Food and drink are not allowed in the exhibition rooms, so plan a stop outside the galleries before you start your route. Allow time for the cloakroom, which is free and must be emptied the same day.
Paris weather by month
Most of a Louvre visit happens indoors, but the walk to and from it, the queue and the Tuileries Garden next door depend on the weather. The table gives long-term averages for 1991 to 2020 at the Paris-Montsouris station of Météo-France. They are climate normals, not a forecast for 2026, and they describe the city rather than a measurement at the pyramid.

| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7.6 °C | 3.2 °C | 47.6 mm |
| February | 8.8 °C | 3.3 °C | 41.8 mm |
| March | 12.8 °C | 5.6 °C | 45.2 mm |
| April | 16.6 °C | 7.9 °C | 45.8 mm |
| May | 20.2 °C | 11.1 °C | 69.0 mm |
| June | 23.4 °C | 14.2 °C | 51.3 mm |
| July | 25.7 °C | 16.2 °C | 59.4 mm |
| August | 25.6 °C | 16.0 °C | 58.0 mm |
| September | 21.5 °C | 13.0 °C | 44.7 mm |
| October | 16.5 °C | 9.9 °C | 55.2 mm |
| November | 11.1 °C | 6.2 °C | 54.3 mm |
| December | 8.0 °C | 3.8 °C | 62.0 mm |
Every month has rain on average, so no month is a safe dry window. Spring and autumn are milder for outdoor time than midsummer and winter, which matters for the Tuileries Garden. That is a statement about comfort, not about how busy the museum is. Pack a layer, and put the garden walk before or after your visit, not in the middle.
Best time to visit the Louvre: frequently asked questions
What is the best day to visit the Louvre?
No day can be promised to be quiet. Avoid Tuesday, when the museum is closed, and pick a day that fits your plan. Wednesday and Friday give you the longest hours, until 9 p.m.
Is the evening better than the morning?
Not necessarily. The morning gives you the most hours. The evening on Wednesday and Friday gives you late hours, but some level 2 painting rooms are closed. Choose by what you want to see.
How long does a visit take?
The museum's masterpieces trail is set at 90 minutes, and its introduction tour at 1 hour 30 minutes. Those are product lengths, not averages. Add time for security and walking.
Which month is the best?
Spring and autumn are milder than midsummer and winter, according to the long-term weather averages. No month can be called the quietest at the museum.
Does a reservation save time?
It saves you the uncertainty at the door, and from October 17 to November 1, 2026 it is required for most visitors. It does not skip the security check. See the ticket page.
