Where the Winged Victory stands
The statue is in the Denon wing on level 1, in room 703, at the Daru staircase. In French the staircase is the Escalier Daru. Level 1 is the first floor above the ground floor, which the museum numbers level 0.
The sculpture shows a winged figure of Victory on the prow of a ship. Give yourself time to look at the whole figure first and at the details second.
This guide is independent and has no link to the museum, which sells its own tickets. Our ticket page lists the 2026 prices.

What to look at
The statue rewards a slow look from more than one angle.
The ship
The figure stands on the bow of a ship. The museum explains that the grey marble blocks of the ship were recognized only gradually as belonging to the figure.
The wings
Look at the wings and the drapery as well as the ship.
The staircase
The setting is part of the statue's effect. Take a moment on the staircase before you move on to the next room.

How the statue was put together
According to the museum, the figure and the ship were not found as one piece. The fragments of the figure and the grey marble blocks of the ship were identified as belonging together step by step. What you see today is the result of that long work.
The museum also says the ensemble returned in 2014 in a renewed presentation, after a conservation and cleaning campaign that lasted 18 months. That is a past event, not a closure you need to plan around. The statue has stood at the Daru staircase since then.

Planning your stop
Four points to settle before you go.
Check the room list
Rooms close on rotation, so check the museum's list of available galleries for your date. A listed room is where the work normally stands, not a guarantee.
Plan the route
The Mona Lisa is on the same level, in room 711, and Michelangelo's slaves are one level down in room 403. Our highlights route puts the Winged Victory between the Sully wing and the paintings.
Step-free access
The statue stands at a staircase. If you need a step-free route, ask at an information point for the current way to reach the best viewing spot. Our map guide explains the wings and levels.
Photos
Private photos are allowed in the permanent collections. Flash, extra lighting and selfie sticks are banned, and objects larger than 55 x 35 x 20 cm cannot enter the reception area.
The three icons side by side
Most first-time visitors want the Winged Victory, the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Here is where each one stands.
| Work | Wing | Level | Room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winged Victory of Samothrace | Denon | 1 | 703, Daru staircase |
| Mona Lisa | Denon | 1 | 711, Salle des États |
| Venus de Milo | Sully | 0 | 345 or 346 |
The first two are on the same level of the same wing, so they make an easy pair. The Venus de Milo is in another wing, so plan the crossing through the hall under the pyramid. Together the three take longer than most people expect, especially if you stop at each one for more than a photo. Spread them over the day or pick the two that matter to you, and leave time for the rest of the collection.
