How this list works

The Louvre holds far more than anyone can see in a day. This list picks fifteen works that cover painting, sculpture, Egypt and Mesopotamia. The choice is ours, and the museum does not rank its collection. Each entry gives the wing, the level and the room number the museum lists.

Levels are numbered 0 for the ground floor, 1 for the first floor and -1 for the basement. The three wings are Denon, Sully and Richelieu, and they connect through the hall under the pyramid. A map of the wings and entrances helps before you start.

Rooms close on rotation, so a listed room is not a promise that the work is on view on your day. Check the museum's gallery list for your date. You may not manage all fifteen in one visit.

A route through the fifteen

This order follows the locations above. We have laid it out on paper, so keep it flexible and do not rely on set walking times.

Start in Sully

Begin with Egypt (the Scribe, the Sphinx) and the Venus de Milo, then cross to the Denon wing.

Climb the Daru staircase

The Winged Victory stands at the top, on level 1 in Denon, the same level as the painting rooms.

Paintings on level 1

Go to rooms 700 and 702 for the Raft of the Medusa, Liberty and the Coronation, then to room 711 for the Mona Lisa, Veronese and Titian.

Sculpture on level 0

Come down to room 403 for the two Michelangelo slaves and the Canova.

Finish in Richelieu

End with Hammurabi if the Mesopotamia galleries are open. If not, stop at room 403 and finish with a walk in the Tuileries Garden.

For a smaller day, choose one wing. A guided tour saves planning time. The opening hours page shows which evenings run later, and when to visit covers seasons.

Louvre highlights: frequently asked questions

What are the top works to see at the Louvre?

This guide lists fifteen, led by the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. It is an editorial selection, not a ranking by the museum.

How long does a highlights visit take?

The museum's own masterpieces course is planned at 90 minutes. That figure belongs to that course. We cannot give a time for this list, since it depends on queues, closed rooms and your pace.

Can I see all fifteen in one day?

Not guaranteed. Rooms close on rotation and the wings are far apart. Pick the works that matter most to you and treat the rest as extras.

Which wing has the most highlights?

Denon, with eleven of the fifteen. Sully has three and Richelieu one.

Is Hammurabi's stele always on view?

It is listed in Richelieu, level 0, room 227. The Mesopotamia galleries have been shown as closed in recent lists, so check the gallery list first.

Do I need a guided tour for the highlights?

No, but it removes the planning. The museum also sells its own guided tour and an audio guide at €6 in nine languages, German included.
